It is estimated that Jay N. "Ding" Darling drew about 15,000 political cartoons between 1900 and 1949. He won two Pulitzer Prizes. Darling was also the leading conservationist and ecologist of his generation, serving for almost two years as head of the U.S. Biological Survey during Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. He designed the first federal Duck Stamp, the proceeds of which were earmarked for waterfowl refuges and enforcement of migratory bird regulations. "Ding" Darling's editorial cartoons are unrivaled in their ability quickly to convey the complex political issues of the 1920's. Abstract policies like tax cuts and farm subsidies come to life through Darling's art and wit. The examples below are selected from over 1,400 "Ding" Darling cartoons initially identified for possible use in "Things of the Spirit." Links lead to related quotations of Calvin Coolidge.
